Jill Jones is 2008 Artist of the Year

Plans to host new members show in conjunction with her solo exhibit at CAA

Mixed media artist Jill Jones is the artist who garnered the most points from January 2008 through November 2008 by participating in monthly meeting competitions and CAA shows, along with earning points for a variety of awards.  The announcement was made at the December Holiday Potluck Party.

Jill said she learned from previous winners Mary Novak, Frances Fraser and Al Varela, who all validated that the key to winning is to participate consistently.  "Make sure to participate in the monthly competitions, enter as many pieces as you can in the competitive shows and you just might win.  It doesn't automatically go to a person who wins a Best of Show, or 1st Place award, especially if they only enter one or two shows.  It can be won by artists who consistently participate in the shows and monthly competitions even if you do not win the top honors, so just make the effort to enter consistently and the next Artist of the Year could be you!"

Jill works primarily in acrylic and other water media as well as intaglio and monotype printmaking.  Although her artwork contains recognizable images, it is primarily about places within the heart and mind rather than the world we see.  The work is distinguished by a loose, spontaneous feel within layers and textures.  Her work has won numerous awards at the Corona Art Association as well as the National Orange Show in San Bernardino and Small Works Exhibitions at Brandon Gallery in Fallbrook.

“I’m totally addicted to the wonderful high of creativity.  I love art--a wide variety of styles and media--and I love to be inspired by the give and take between artists.  There is a sense of passion, discovery and heat generated when artists get together.   There is nothing like getting completely absorbed in artwork to restore your sense of hope and purpose.”

In addition to studio work, Jill’s creative life has been in high gear as she has been working to expand opportunities for artists in the Corona/Norco/Riverside area.  In addition to being an active member in the Corona Art Association she is also involved with building partnerships and alliances with RAM, Associated Artists of the Inland Empire, Fallbrook Art Association and Brandon Gallery in Fallbrook and she is a board member of the Riverside Arts Council.

“Artists can feel isolated and become deterred by many obstacles, so it’s important to form numerous vibrant arts communities that work together and support each other throughout the region.  I’m very committed to that process.”

Artist of the Year and New Members Show

To showcase the talents of the newest members of the Corona Art Association, Jill will curate a “New Members” show to be displayed along with her Artist of the Year solo exhibit during April 2009 at the Corona Art House Gallery, 510 W. Foothill Parkway in Corona Heritage Park from Saturday April 4 through Wednesday April 29.

“The Corona Art Association has experienced a significant resurgence in the past couple years with the influx of many new and talented members.  I want to celebrate the new energy of the emerging artists within the local and regional area.  Winning Artist of the Year gives me the ability to tailor a show to thank our new members who have made this past couple years such a joy.  It gives all of us at CAA the chance to shine a light on the diverse talents which inspire us and help all of us to be better artists.”

Artists who joined CAA between January 2006 and December 2008 are invited to submit up to four (4) works to be considered for the exhibit.  Artists are asked to deliver display ready work on Wed. April 1 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.  Work will be juried and selected by Jill and the exhibit will be installed with the help of show chair, Cathi Calhoun.

The opening reception takes place Saturday April 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 and will include a fundraiser opportunity for the CAA Scholarship Fund.  The public is invited to attend the opening reception to view the exhibit, to meet the artists and to participate in the celebration.  For more information regarding Jill’s artwork and creative activities visit www.brainwavesart.com and www.coachthearts.com

How to Become Artist of the Year

The competition is wide open each year and any one of our members could win the event if they participate in the annual exhibits and events including the three competitive shows, the themed and rotating shows and the monthly meeting competitions.

Participation is the most important factor for winning Artist of the Year.  Yes, it’s true. Participation is the key.

The Artist of the Year Award was developed with the intent of rewarding artists who are producing and exhibiting artwork as part of their participation and support for the CAA and its events.  It recognizes not only the artwork produced, but also the active support and participation in the CAA by member artists.  That’s why the Artist of the Year wins not only recognition on a plaque and a certificate, but also the opportunity to install a solo show the following year with full publicity and support from the CAA.

Each year it is a wide open competition that anyone could win, especially if artists enter each of the monthly meeting competitions that are judged by our demonstrators, as well as entering our competitive shows.  Prize winners gain extra points, but the most important factor is consistency in participation.  You receive points for each piece that you enter in a competitive show and in the monthly competition up to the maximum number of entries allowed.

As an example, this past year ended in a tie with several artists close behind the winners.  If any number of artists had entered every show and each monthly competition they may have gained enough points to have inched ahead, even if they had not won a place award in a competitive show.

Mark the monthly meeting and art show dates on your calendar and make that extra effort to attend every single meeting and show take-in date.  You may bring up to two pieces each month for the monthly meeting competition.  As Woody Allen once said, “Eighty percent of success is showing up.”

Here are the details of how the AOY points are awarded and scores tabulated.  A point system, based both on awards received and on participation in events during the CAA calendar year, provides the guidance for distributing points as follows:

Monthly Meeting Competitions

At each monthly meeting from January through November (excluding June, July and August) an artist receives 1 point for each entry up to a maximum of two per artist per month for work entered at the regular monthly meetings.  Additional points are given to place winners as follows:  3 points for First, 2 points for Second, and 1 point for Third.  Place winners are determined by the selection of the monthly meeting demonstrator.

Show Competitions

Eligible works include any pieces which have not previously won Best of Show or First Place in any previous CAA show competition.

Two points per entry are awarded for each entry to the allowable limit for participation for each show (current limit is 3).  Additional points are awarded to place holder winners as determined by the show judge.  Best of Show 9 points, First Place 7 points, Second Place 5 points, First Place 3 points, and all Honorable Mention winners receive 1 point.  Popular Choice and any special bonus or sponsorship awards determined by local businesses or other local entities are awarded 5 points each.

Currently CAA hosts the following competitive shows:

  •   Founder’s Day Show in Feb.

  •   Spring Fling Show in April

  •   Dominick Frascella Show in Nov.

Any artist having won the AOY award in three consecutive years may continue to participate in monthly competitions and CAA shows and exhibits, but will be ineligible to receive the AOY Award again until one full year has elapsed after their third successive win.
