The Corona Art Association is pleased to announce that r. mike nichols has won the 2009 Artist of the Year competition. nichols actively participated in CAA events and won numerous awards during competitive shows this past year to receive the honor. As the winner of the competition, nichols will host a solo show at the CAA Art House Gallery at 510 W. Foothill Parkway in Heritage Park during the month of April 2010, with an artist reception on Saturday, April 10, 2010, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
"I encourage everyone to have
goals, participate, and create art that brings you joy! I am very excited about
my solo show. I plan to create theme rooms within the Art House that will
display my varied artistic interests, so mark your calendars for April 10th!"
nichols stated enthusiastically. nichols has created an extensive body of work in several themes including watercolors of the twenty one California missions, paintings of his gregarious dogs in addition to pet portrait commissions, and a cerebral series called “Floating” which combines images in imaginative, surreal settings evoking subconscious ideas and subliminal thoughts.
"In my art I look for images that grab my attention and beg to be taken further. I love light and shadow, color and curious perspectives. I want to challenge viewers to understand what is going on in my work, to come up with their own story lines. If I can get a reaction, whether positive or negative, then I have achieved something with my art," nichols stated.
“mike’s work is a delight. He uses an illustrative flair to create works that take the viewer on journeys of reflection, humor, contemplation and appreciation. His works are both technically skilled and creatively imaginative. His interpretations help us take notice of the world around us from the elegance of California architectural history to the heartwarming antics of our beloved, furry, four-legged family members. We are indeed fortunate to have mike as a member of our organization,” stated Jill Jones, CAA board member.
nichols received his Masters in Art from California State University, Long Beach. He resides in Riverside and is an active member of the Riverside Community Arts Association, Watercolor West, National Watercolor Society, San Diego Watercolor Society, California Arts Club and the Riverside Art Museum, in addition to his activities at Corona Art Association. He has won numerous awards and been featured in group and solo shows throughout the region.

How to Become Artist of the YearThe competition is wide open each year and any one of our members could win the event if they participate in the annual exhibits and events including the three competitive shows, the themed and rotating shows and the monthly meeting competitions. Participation is the most important factor for winning Artist of the Year. Yes, it’s true. Participation is the key. The Artist of the Year Award was developed with the intent of rewarding artists who are producing and exhibiting artwork as part of their participation and support for the CAA and its events. It recognizes not only the artwork produced, but also the active support and participation in the CAA by member artists. That’s why the Artist of the Year wins not only recognition on a plaque and a certificate, but also the opportunity to install a solo show the following year with full publicity and support from the CAA. Each year it is a wide open competition that anyone could win, especially if artists enter each of the monthly meeting competitions that are judged by our demonstrators, as well as entering our competitive shows. Prize winners gain extra points, but the most important factor is consistency in participation. You receive points for each piece that you enter in a competitive show and in the monthly competition up to the maximum number of entries allowed. As an example, this past year ended in a tie with several artists close behind the winners. If any number of artists had entered every show and each monthly competition they may have gained enough points to have inched ahead, even if they had not won a place award in a competitive show. Mark the monthly meeting and art show dates on your calendar and make that extra effort to attend every single meeting and show take-in date. You may bring up to two pieces each month for the monthly meeting competition. As Woody Allen once said, “Eighty percent of success is showing up.” Here are the details of how the AOY points are awarded and scores tabulated. A point system, based both on awards received and on participation in events during the CAA calendar year, provides the guidance for distributing points as follows: Monthly Meeting Competitions At each monthly meeting from January through November (excluding June, July and August) an artist receives 1 point for each entry up to a maximum of two per artist per month for work entered at the regular monthly meetings. Additional points are given to place winners as follows: 3 points for First, 2 points for Second, and 1 point for Third. Place winners are determined by the selection of the monthly meeting demonstrator. Show Competitions Eligible works include any pieces which have not previously won Best of Show or First Place in any previous CAA show competition. Two points per entry are awarded for each entry to the allowable limit for participation for each show (current limit is 3). Additional points are awarded to place holder winners as determined by the show judge. Best of Show 9 points, First Place 7 points, Second Place 5 points, First Place 3 points, and all Honorable Mention winners receive 1 point. Popular Choice and any special bonus or sponsorship awards determined by local businesses or other local entities are awarded 5 points each. Currently CAA hosts the following competitive shows:
Any artist having won the AOY award in three consecutive years may continue to participate in monthly competitions and CAA shows and exhibits, but will be ineligible to receive the AOY Award again until one full year has elapsed after their third successive win.
