ART HAPPENS HERE! |
President's Corner - Winter 2008
It's that time of year again when we celebrate many holidays and events in rapid succession. It can get to be a very chaotic time of year, so we want to make sure to pause amid the hustle and bustle to acknowledge and appreciate the positive events of the past year. We have much to be thankful for especially at the Corona Art Association. It's been a very full, active year and we have been delighted to welcome so many new and returning members to our organization. Our members and volunteers provided great new themed art shows at the Art House Gallery all summer long and that initiative has been extended into the November through February holiday period. We end 2008 with a special holiday themed show called "Sparkle, Twinkle and Glow" and that leads us right into the next holiday show during January and February--"Heart and Soul" in honor of the Valentine Holiday. Check with Cathi Calhoun for more details about our shows. She's been working hard to make the gallery a more exciting place to exhibit your work and for visitors to enjoy the wealth of creativity right here in Corona. Cathi Calhoun and Jill Jones also worked on a new display venue this fall with the owners of Rejuvenate in Corona. The exhibits occur on a rotating basis at Rejuvenate, the offices of Dr. Kirk Ramasar, in the shopping center to the east of the 91 at the Ontario on ramp. Each new rotation is marked by a Gallery Night Opening Reception to tour the show and meet the artists. The inaugural CAA display opened on Saturday Nov. 1 and includes forty six works by eleven CAA artists. It continues until the Spring of 2009, so please stop by the Rejuvenate office to see the works. Please make sure to join us for furture Gallery Nights. We are excited about this new venue and greatly appreciate the partnership with Dr. Ramasar, his wife Kirsten, and all the staff at Rejuvenate. Despite troubling economic times, interest in the arts continues to grow within our community and the region. We have welcomed many new members into the Corona Art Association and we continue to make new friends who are interested in expanding the role of all the arts throughout the entire Inland Region. We are extremely grateful for the help, donations and support of community and regional leaders and especially to Daniel Foster and Ali and Aida Sahabi. They have been generous with their time, expertise and donations. They are part of a strong network of arts oriented organizations growing within the region to help each other thrive and expand and we are grateful to them for partnering with us in that effort. Our mission statement speaks to advancing the arts within the community through arts education so we decided one of the best ways to address that goal was to expand our scholarship program. In June our scholarship committee announced the names of the three high school students who received funds from the Maxine Piester Memorial Scholarship and the Otis Washington Scholarship to pursue additional art education. Our scholarship recipients' art works were on display at the "Red, Hot, Cool" Summer Show at the Art House Gallery and we are extremely proud of our first high school scholarship recipients. In the coming months our scholarship committee will be reconvening to replenish our scholarship fund and seek new candidates for 2009 scholarships. Please get involved with this wonderful program in any way that you can. It's very important to keep the arts alive within our young people in the community. We've accomplished much this past year with the help of key board members, our wonderful volunteers and great supporters. We have much more to do so we welcome participation by more artists and art supporters in the region. If you can volunteer any of your time, efforts or make donations to our programs please contact us. We welcome whatever assistance you can provide. Please stop by our gallery to find out more about our organization. We welcome your participation and support and we would be happy to talk to you about the many ways you can help our community through the arts. If you have questions, suggestions or want to be involved, please contact either myself at (951) 206-0222, email akaog@mac.com, or Jill Jones at (951) 898-9554, email jillkjones@sbcglobal.net
