About the event

Quilling (also known as paper filigree) is a decorative artwork that involves rolling, shaping, and gluing thin strips of paper together to create intricate, textured designs.

How It Works

  • Rolling: Thin strips of paper are wound tightly into coils or scrolls around a tool, traditionally a bird's feather quill, but modern crafters use a slotted needle, toothpick, or awl.

  • Shaping: The rolled coil is released and pinched, curved, or twisted into specific geometric shapes like teardrops, squares, crescents, or arrows.

  • Gluing: These individual shapes are arranged edge-to-edge or flat-backed on a surface and glued together to form complex patterns, typography, or 3D sculptures.

Local artist Mike Nieves will talk about how he got in to this unique method of quilling as an artform, and as a business. He will show a number of his artworks as examples, and demonstrate how to make simple shapes with the paper and quilling tool.…
